Lessons I've Learned Along the Way
When I first dreamed of starting The Mustard Seed Behavioral Health, I imagined the destination.
I pictured serving families, supporting children, building an incredible team, and creating a place where people felt seen, respected, and empowered.
What I didn't fully appreciate was everything the journey would teach me before I ever opened my doors.
Building a business has stretched me in ways I never expected. It's required patience, humility, courage, and a willingness to keep moving forward—even when the next step wasn't completely clear.
As I continue building The Mustard Seed, here are some of the biggest lessons I've learned along the way.
Growth Rarely Happens in a Straight Line
I used to believe progress meant constantly moving forward.
Now I know that growth often looks more like taking two steps forward, one step back, learning something new, adjusting the plan, and continuing anyway.
There have been delays.
Unexpected challenges.
Moments where I questioned whether I was ready.
But every obstacle has taught me something I couldn't have learned any other way.
Progress isn't always fast—but it's still progress.
You Don't Have to Know Everything Before You Start
One of the biggest myths about entrepreneurship is that successful business owners have all the answers before they begin.
The truth?
Most of us are learning as we go.
I've spent countless hours researching, asking questions, attending trainings, seeking mentorship, reading regulations, and learning from people who have walked this path before me.
I've realized that confidence doesn't come from knowing everything.
It comes from trusting yourself to figure out the next step.
Asking for Help Is a Strength
For a long time, I believed I had to do everything myself.
Now I understand that great organizations are built through collaboration.
I've learned from mentors, colleagues, business owners, families, and professionals who generously shared their knowledge and experience.
No one builds something meaningful alone.
Seeking guidance doesn't make us less capable—it helps us become better leaders.
People Matter More Than Processes
Policies and procedures are important.
Systems matter.
Organization matters.
But people always come first.
Whether it's a child receiving services, a caregiver looking for support, or an employee coming to work each day, every person deserves to feel respected, heard, and valued.
The strongest organizations aren't built on perfect systems.
They're built on healthy relationships.
Leadership Begins With Listening
I've learned that leadership isn't about having the loudest voice in the room.
It's about listening.
Listening to families.
Listening to employees.
Listening to children.
Listening to feedback.
Listening to perspectives different from my own.
The more I listen, the better equipped I am to serve others well.
Perfection Isn't the Goal
As someone who naturally wants things done well, I've had to remind myself that waiting for perfection often delays progress.
There will always be another detail to tweak.
Another document to revise.
Another idea to improve.
I've learned that excellence is important—but perfection shouldn't prevent meaningful action.
Sometimes the best thing we can do is take the next faithful step.
Stay Grounded in Your "Why"
Whenever challenges arise, I come back to the reason this journey began.
The Mustard Seed Behavioral Health was never simply about opening another ABA practice.
It was about creating a place where children and families feel genuinely supported, where compassionate, evidence-based care and meaningful relationships go hand in hand, and where every individual is treated with dignity and respect.
When your purpose is clear, difficult seasons become easier to navigate.
Celebrate the Small Wins
It's easy to become so focused on the next milestone that we forget to appreciate how far we've already come.
Every completed application.
Every lesson learned.
Every connection made.
Every goal achieved.
Every family who trusts us in the future.
Each one deserves to be celebrated.
Small seeds eventually grow into strong trees—not overnight, but through steady growth over time.
Faith Over Fear
One of the greatest lessons I've learned is that fear will almost always tell us we're not ready.
Faith reminds us that we don't have to have every answer before taking the next step.
There have been moments when uncertainty felt overwhelming.
But I've learned that courage isn't the absence of fear—it's choosing to move forward despite it.
Sometimes the smallest step of faith becomes the beginning of something far greater than we imagined.
The Journey Is Shaping Me Too
As I build The Mustard Seed Behavioral Health, I often think about how much this business is shaping me as a leader, a professional, and a person.
The lessons I'm learning today will influence how I serve families, support future team members, and lead this organization for years to come.
The destination is exciting.
But the journey has been one of the greatest gifts.
Thank You for Being Here
Whether you're a parent, caregiver, professional, fellow entrepreneur, or someone simply following along, thank you for being part of this journey.
Your encouragement, questions, conversations, and support mean more than you know.
I look forward to continuing to grow alongside this incredible community—one small step at a time.
From the Founder 🌱
When I chose the name The Mustard Seed Behavioral Health, it wasn't because mustard seeds grow overnight. It was because they remind me that even the smallest beginnings can grow into something strong, resilient, and life-giving.
Wherever you are in your own journey—whether you're raising a child, building a career, pursuing a dream, or simply taking the next step—don't underestimate the power of small beginnings.
